Epson Perfection 2450 Film Scanner ReviewBecause I'm not in a long winded mood at the moment, I'm going to cut right to the chase with this one. I received this scanner as a birthday present. I asked for it because I wanted to be able to scan my MF negatives for web presentation. Is it good at scanning MF negatives? Absolutely yes. If you want to scan your MF negs up to 6x9, this thing is great. It yields plenty of detail for the web, and I suspect it would provide very satisfactory prints up to 11x14 if you want to print digitally. Keep in mind that I'm using Vuescan and only scanning B&W negs. Is it good at scanning 35mm negatives? Yes. It's not as good as my dedicated 35mm film scanner, but it produces good size files that are more than detailed enough for the web, and would yield great 8x10's if you want to print digitally, or perhaps even 11x14's (although you'd need to res the scan up in photoshop). How about slides? No idea. I haven't tried scanning slides with it yet. My suspicion is that for MF slides, it'll do a decent job, but don't expect a lot of shadow detail. And if your exposure was off by more than a stop either way, forget it. This scanner just doesn't have the DMAX to extract enough information to save a badly exposed slide. But then, a badly exposed slide is pretty ugly anyway, so why are you trying to scan it? Overall, what do I think? Awesome! Although mine was a present, so I didn't have to shell out the cash for it, I'd buy it for myself if I had to. Why? Simply because it does a great job scanning my MF negs, and it's a decent backup to my dedicated 35mm scanner, should it ever go belly up. Want to read some of my other Equipment Reviews? |
